The
word 'use' has a degree plurality here.
It
can be a vague word and its meaning is
determined
by the context of its usage.
The
common interpretation the 'use'
of
Marijuana:
To smoke marijuana.
President
Clinton's
'use'
however...
To
smoke and inhale the Marijuana fumes.
When
subsequently discovered that he did
'use'
(first
definition), he argued that he
'smoked
but never inhaled'.
Because of society's conventions, many would not take his view seriously and a few may even accuse him of 'verbal- hairsplitting'.
If,
however, plurality (such a virtue according to Barthes)
were carried to the extreme, Clinton's defence would not be sidelined as
'verbal-hairsplitting' but instead be on the same level of those who took
the conventional definition of use.
